TWENTY-FIVE FREE FONTS SUITABLE FOR COVERS
The font you pick for your cover is important. It needs to help convey the tone of the book, the genre and be clear enough and bold enough to be readable even when reduced down to a small thumbnail.
One of the key issues I’ve tended to see with self-published and self-designed covers are fonts that are either unreadable or simply lack any real aesthetic style. I’ve put together a list of 25 fonts that are completely free (either public domain or the license has no commercial restrictions). The fonts should be easy enough to find and download with a search engine. Some of these fonts are lighter than I would personally prefer, but, some genres, especially literary and crime genres tend to use quite thin, modern styles on covers, so I thought it sensible to include a few in this vein. I’ve attempted to select across a range, but you’ll notice that there are no fonts here made out of hammered together swords, or dripping blood spatters or made out of flowers. Even if your book is wildly goofy, the title font should not be. About ninety percent of the time I suspect that a very straightforward but attractive font like Garamond or Helvetica would do perfectly well. However, that said, here are a few options.
